ABAP is a programming language like any other. I think first decide if you are a programmer or not. If you are a programmer, there are 2 things you will need to learn:
1. The syntax, and this is easy.
2. The SAP environment(really hard), but you can only gain this via practical experience.

I would make 2 suggestions.

1. The quality of ABAP help has degraded, but help.sap.com, still has some good info(If you can get your hands on a 4.6C help file use it. Its better). Also, read sdn.sap.com and the net in general, lots of examples to be found.

2. Get a system and start developing apps(this is the quickest way to learn). You can order this for free at http://www.sap.com/linux. SAP will ship you a CD for free. It is a older release with no ERP features and only runs on Linux, but ABAP is still there. There are other test drives available as well.

I assume you want to do certification without formal training? You can, but it is tough to find and get through all the material covered in the course.

I would like to know what is a good way and where to go to get started in SAP ABAP. Maybe online tutor and later certification. Do you have any recommendations?
